For Week 9 of 10/10-Reflections on a Decade of Exhibitions we are reviewing the year 2018. One of the exhibits from this year was Southbound: Photographs of and about the New South, featuring works by various photographers. These artists present the American South in the twenty-first century through many different lenses, allowing for a glimpse, albeit incomplete and imperfect, of the “New South.”

This week’s activity is similar to one presented during the exhibition’s Family Day! event, where participants were encouraged to collage postcards and mail them after the event. This week’s project can be mailed, perhaps to a relative or friend not seen recently due to quarantine, or kept on display at home. Supplies needed are the postcard template, scissors, glue, and any materials desired for the collage, including but not limited to: magazines, newspapers, fabrics, food wrappers, and plants.

Instructions:

1. Create a collage inspired by the question: What does “New South” mean to you?
2. Print out this postcard template or measure out your own.
3. Find images, letters, objects, and whatever else you want for your collage.
4. Begin cutting and pasting to create your desired composition. I like to lay out and arrange all my pieces before beginning to glue.
5. Voila! Put in the mail or display on your fridge.
