Artist highlight | Jumaadi’s Diary of Dust

Wed Jul 29, 2020

For his 2014 exhibition at the Halsey Institute, Forgive Me Not to Miss You Not, Indonesian artist Jumaadi created a 23-foot drawing. In 2016, the Halsey Institute commissioned San Francisco-based filmmaker, Dave Brown, along with Hed Hi Media to create a video animation based off of the drawing.

The video encompasses both the artwork and original gamelan music created and performed by Nathan Koci. While watching the video, the viewer becomes mesmerized by the movement of the images coming towards them as well as the many eyes shaping each of the figures. Encompassing an otherworldly feeling, Jumaadi depicts metaphors through his work. The combination of the images and the music allows for the viewers mind to wander into the artwork and explore the artwork and the meaning behind the images.
