Dis/placements Activity | Paper Bag House

Wed Oct 07, 2020

Over the next few weeks, we invite readers to try some of the suggested activities from our Displacements Education packet, a resource meant for children and adults to utilize either at home or in the classroom. This week’s activity is a paper bag house and is suitable for children ages three and older.

To start, find a paper bag of any size. Invite children to decorate the bag like their home. Encourage them to use a variety of materials such as felt, construction paper, markers, or paint. If older, they can think about including medium that some of the Displacements artists work with, such as found objects or collage. They can add the details of the exterior of their home such as bricks, wood, windows, and doors. They can also include other objects or people that remind them of home such as family members, pets, a mailbox, or a garden. When finished decorating, fill the inside of the bag with recycled materials such as newspaper, tissue paper, or plastic. Staple the top together. Fold a piece of construction paper, fabric, or scrapbook paper in half, and staple or glue it on the top of the house for a roof. Ask children to explain each item that they chose to include. If they enjoyed this project, be sure to check out some of the other activities, suggested readings, and discussion questions in the education packet.

If you did this project or something similar, please share with us! Let us know by email at halsey@cofc.edu. Happy creating!
