Barbara Duval Professor of printmaking and has been teaching at the College for over 20 years.  She was born and raised in the hardscrabble section of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York, and received a BFA Degree from Pratt Institute and an MFA from Yale University.  In 1982, after completing her studies at Yale, she took a position at the College of Charleston. 

In 1985-86 Duval was the recipient of a Belgian American Educational Foundation Fellowship to study painting and graphic art in Belgium, and a Fulbright Fellowship to Berlin Germany in 1987-88.  Other awards that she has received include a MacDowell Colony Fellowship, two South Carolina Arts Commission Individual Artist Fellowships, a D.A.A.D. Grant to Germany, an NEH Summer Stipend and two Ford Foundation Grants.  In addition, she has been an Artist in Residence at the Brandywine Workshop in Philadelphia, the Vermont Studio Center Press, the National Centre Frans Masereel in Belgium, and the Altos de Chavon Cultural Foundation in the Dominican Republic.  In 2001 she received the College of Charleston’s Distinguished Research Award. 

Duval’s work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums in the United States and abroad, and is included in numerous public and private collections, among them: The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Fogg Art Museum, and the Contemporary Art Center in Osaka Japan.  At the College of Charleston, Professor Duval teaches all forms of printmaking, and sometimes painting and drawing.
