The Halsey Institute, in collaboration with the Charleston Music Hall, presented an intimate evening of music featuring Charleston’s finest locally and nationally recognized musical acts on Groundhog Day.

MUSICAL ACTS

The Groundhog Day Concert featured music by The Opposite of a Train (Bill Carson, Nathan Koci, and Ron Wiltrout) with special guests Kevin Hamilton, Charlton Singleton, Wilton Elder, Clint Fore and John Cobb. This “house band” provided accompaniment to the evening’s invited guest artists including award-winning duo Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent, Lindsay Holler, Stephanie Underhill, Joel Hamilton, Rachel Kate, and Michael Flynn.

The evening’s musical director Bill Carson says, “This concert is a way for the local music community to show its support for the fantastic contemporary arts programming that the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art provides year-round, and year after year. The Halsey often collaborates with musicians, actors, filmmakers, architects, designers, and others to create its unique multi-disciplinary offerings. The participating musicians all want to shine the spotlight on the Halsey Institute in gratitude for their dynamic and inspirational role in this community.”

The evening began with the premier of a micro-documentary about the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art produced by local media creatives Lunch + Recess.

“Groundhog Day is an underappreciated and much overlooked holiday,“ says Halsey Institute Director Mark Sloan, with a chuckle. “The Halsey Institute would like to draw attention by celebrating our 30th Anniversary and Groundhog Day with a special, intimate evening of music. This concert will be a rare opportunity to experience an exceptional collection of musical talent sharing one stage in a single evening.”

Bill Carson

Musician and educator Bill Carson grew up in Charleston. Since the late 1990s he has had the privilege of working with a great diversity of artists in wide breadth of musical contexts, from underground noise rock experiments and folk musicology to formal chamber concerts and commissions for theatre, dance, and film.

Nathan Koci

Nathan Koci is a Brooklyn-based musician from Charleston, South Carolina.  He enjoys and instigates collaborative music-making as often as he can, be it folk songs, chamber music, jazz, or improvising in various styles.  He tries his hand at whatever instrument is closest, but mostly makes sounds on brass and keyboard instruments, from the french horn to the trumpet, accordion to old uprights.  As a composer, Koci has composed for theatre, dance, and film, as well as for his hometown boys The Opposite of a Train. He recently made his theatrical debut with the first national tour of the Tony Award-winning play WarHorse, performing as one of two Songmen across the U.S. in 2012/13.

 

Ron Wiltrout

Ron Wiltrout is a percussionist based in Charleston, South Carolina. He  performs regularly throughout the Southeast with ensembles whose styles range from jazz and salsa to free improvisation to avant-garde and contemporary classical music. An avid performer of new music, he has premiered pieces by Ted Hearne, Michael Pisaro, Sam Sfirri, Mustafa Walker, Sean Friar, Philip White, and Nathan Koci. Ron is devoted to exploring the use of unconventional percussion and extended techniques. He co-leads multiple jazz groups and is currently co-artistic director for the New Music Collective. Ron has performed with Lewis/Gregory/Wiltrout, the Rudy Waltz, Garage Cuban Band, Lee Barbour, Tommy Gill, Bert Ligon, Brad Moranz, The Charleston Latin Jazz Collective, Duda Lucena, Kopaja, Delusion Story, Katrina Ballads, The Charleston Jazz Orchestra, and The Opposite of a Train.

Rachel Kate Gillon

Nashville-born Rachel Kate Gillon is a singer, multi-instrumentalist, and darling of Charleston’s eclectic indie circuit. The former front-woman of explosive rock’n’roll outfit The Shaniqua Brown, Rachel has embarked on acoustic projects that reveal the sweeter side of her still-powerful voice. She currently performs solo and with the Americana quartet The Local Honeys and recently released a solo album, “Rachel Kate with Love and Hate”.

Joel T. Hamilton

Joel T. Michael Flynn

Michael Flynn is a singer/songwriter/falconer, though technically he hasn’t really started the falconing in earnest yet.  His songs have been in TV shows, commercials, and in the overhead speakers of public restrooms nationwide.  He sang in the band Slow Runner.  He’s working on his debut solo record while also making music for videogames, mostly while wearing pajamas well into the afternoon.

Lindsay Holler

Lindsay Holler sings and plays guitar. Holler lives in Charleston, South Carolina. She hails the South as home and has lived in New Orleans and New York; she studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston and the College of Charleston.   Holler cites influences from the likes of Tom Waits, Gram Parsons, Nina Simone and Neil Young – preferring genre straddlers, categorical misfits and indefinables.

Charlton Singleton

Charlton Singleton was born on January 7, 1971, the youngest of the three children of the Rev. Charles and Jeanette Singleton, both in education, of Awendaw, South Carolina. Charlton has emerged in the last several years as the face of jazz performance in the Lowcountry. After long stints in various small ensembles playing many styles of popular music, he became conductor and artistic director of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra that arose from the prototypical Charlton Singleton Orchestra in March of 2008. He is also a prominent educator, providing private lessons and having taught in local school districts where his reputation is legendary. He is a board member of Jazz Artists of Charleston where he serves as vice president. No other individual has done more in the Lowcountry recently than Charlton to further the history and legacy of jazz music in South Carolina. His work, the light of his life, burnishes the lives of all who encounter him and it appears to be poised to go on forever.

Kevin Hamilton

Kevin Hamilton is a bassist and composer from Charleston, South Carolina.  He holds a music theory and composition degree from the College of Charleston.  He has toured and performed throughout the United States and internationally. He has studied with many noted musicians including Delbert Felix and Herman Burney.  He is comfortable with many styles of music and has performed with many diverse ensembles including The New Music Collective, The Opposite of a Train, Duda Lucena and the Charleston Jazz Orchestra.  He has also performed with several renowned artists including Houston Person, Gregory Hines and Rene Marie.

 

Wilton Elder

Wilton has performed with a wide range of popular artists including the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Soulive, Derek Trucks Band, Grant Green Jr., Bio Ritmo, and Col. Bruce Hampton. With Super Deluxe, Charleston’s Premier Party Band℠, Elder has produced tribute concerts to Herbie Hancock, J Dilla, and Parliament-Funkadelic and appeared at the Family Circle Cup Tournament, Cooper River Bridge Run, and Jazz Artists of Charleston Jazz Series. Wilton is a founding member of the Rasa Saxophone Quartet, which took the top prize at the 2003 MTNA National Chamber Music Competition in Salt Lake City, UT. As a concert saxophonist, Elder has appeared at new music conferences hosted by the College Musical Society, North American Saxophone Alliance, and the World Saxophone Congress.

John Cobb

John E. Cobb is a native of Charleston from the small town of Parkers Ferry. While living in New York City for 9 years, John attended college and performed with several local Latin combos, show bands, and big bands in the tri-state area. His instrument of preference is the baritone saxophone. Currently, he is a school administrator and freelance musician with many of the local jazz and party bands. He is considered to be both an accomplished musician and educator. His tone is described by many as smooth and warm. He performs weekly at High Cotton restaurant with the James Slater Trio. Music is a passion and education is a second career. In addition, John performs with the Charleston Jazz Orchestra during their regular season.

 

Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent

Though Cary and Michael spend a majority of their time touring as Shovels and Rope, their most honored privilege is to be a part of the Charleston music community, which includes both the Shrimp Records family and New Music Collective. The Groundhog Day performance is a collaboration they cherish especially, because they are huge fans of its director, Mr. Bill Carson. Also, it’s an opportunity to rock out with their Wiltrout.

 

Stephanie Underhill

Stephanie Underhill is a human being who lives in Charleston and feels happiest while singing. She is one of two parts of the band Babylips and attempts to play instruments from time to time. Her greatest accomplishment to date is her son Tevoda.

 

Clint Fore

Clint Fore is a visual artist and adaptive musician who is equally at ease playing deafening punk rock guitar and leading his own chamber group, Clint4.
