Annual Juried Student Exhibition

YOUNG CONTEMPORARIES 2013

Each spring, current College of Charleston students are eligible to submit their recent work to the Young Contemporaries, giving them an opportunity to have their work chosen by a nationally prominent juror and exhibit in a professional gallery setting. For the 2013 Young Contemporaries exhibition, Minnesota based artist and curator Scott Stulen was chosen to select the student works. Local artist Hirona Matsuda selected 17 works to receive awards.

We received a total of 616 submissions for the 2013 Young Contemporaries exhibition. Scott Stulen, our 2013 juror, selected 79 works to be on view within the Halsey Institute galleries. CLICK HERE for a list of pieces accepted into Young Contemporaries 2013.

Students who were not accepted into the Young Contemporaries exhibition, had the chance to be selected by their professors for the Salon des Refusés, taking place in the Hill Gallery, located just outside the Halsey Institute. 30 works were selected for the Salon des Refusés.

Students who were not accepted into the Salon des Refusés, had the chance to be selected by their peers for the Salon des Refusés des Refusés, taking place in the VAC Gallery, located on the first floor of the Simons Center. 11 works were selected for the Salon des Refusés des Refusés.

The origin of the “Salon des Refusés” dates to Paris in 1863, when artists who had been rejected from the official Salon caused such a protest that Emperor Napoleon III ordered another exhibition held for them. Notable painters in this “Salon des Refusés” were Pissaro, Latour, Whistler, and Manet.

These annual exhibitions are jointly produced by the Halsey Institute, the Studio Art Department, and the Student Visual Arts Club at the College of Charleston School of the Arts. The 2013 Young Contemporaries is dedicated to Dr. Norton Seltzer, who passed away last Fall. Norton was a tireless advocate for the potential of young artists.
