Scott Stulen is an artist, dj, curator and programmer. He is the Project Director of mnartists.org, an online art hub serving over 20,000 Midwest artists, Director of the McKnight Artist Fellowship for Photographers and former Associate Curator at the Rochester Art Center (MN). He received his BFA in Sculpture from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1998 and his MFA in Painting and Drawing with a minor in Art History from the University of Minnesota in 2004.
He has developed innovative on and off-line programming including Community Supported Art (CSA) in partnership with Springboard for the Arts, Open Field at the Walker Art Center, Drawing Club and the first Internet Cat Video Festival. His has curated exhibitions and programs at The Rochester Art Center, Walker Art Center, The Soap Factory, Soo Visual Art Center, TuckUnder Gallery and Northern Spark Festival. Scott is the co-founder of the SELLOUT gallery and has served on the board of the Soap Factory. Stulen has presented at TEDx Indy, IN; SXSW Interactive in Austin, TX; and the upcoming Open Engagement conference in Portland, OR.
Stulen’s visual artwork explores personal and collective memory, pop culture, failure, loss and obsession through painting, sculpture, installation and video. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the 2004 Katherine E. Nash Purchase Prize, 2005 and 2009 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant and 2008 Meet the Composer’s Creative Connections Grant. Scott exhibits throughout the country including recent solo exhibitions Wait for It, Minnesota State University, Mankato, MN; Kool Aid Drunk at ebersmoore gallery, Chicago, IL; Why are you making me sad at the 9th Street Gallery, St. Paul, MN; and Lead Guitar, No Vocals at St. Cloud State University. His work is included in numerous public and private collections including the Weisman Art Museum and University of Minnesota. His work was selected for inclusion in the juried national publication New American Paintings in both 2004 and 2007. He also performs as a DJ and electronic musician under the name Black Lacquer.
