We enjoy healthy support from the College of Charleston, and greatly needed financial assistance from the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation. Recently, we received a major program support grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, along with project grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Asian Cultural Council, Harpo Foundation, Joanna Foundation, Coastal Community Foundation, The Henry and Sylvia Yaschik Foundation and the National Lunar Science Institute. Our programming has been exceptionally well received, and we have developed many new strategic partnerships.
While we are delighted by the continued support that we have received from various foundations and grants, we cannot possibly sustain our dynamic programming without the encouragement and support of our Members and Community Partners-those who keep the mighty Halsey afloat.
Your participation in this program is vital to the stability and growth of the Halsey Institute. We hope you will join us by becoming a Halsey Community Partner. After all, our Members and Community Partners are the lifeblood of our daily operations.
Would your organization like to become involved in making the Halsey happen? Join HICA’s Community Partners program, the perfect opportunity to align your brand with the innovative and vibrant contemporary art culture in our community. You will receive the perks and privileges of a HICA membership and the marketing benefits of a sponsorship. By becoming a Partner of the Halsey Institute, your organization will not only provide support for HICA’s exhibitions and programming but you will have the rare opportunity to share your brand with our diverse demographic of students, artists, art educators and art lovers.

David Schnell, Owner & Baker, Brown’s Court Bakery
Much like the business of baking bread, David’s life journey has had an abundance of humility and simplicity. After graduating from Carleton College, he earned the opportunity to do postgraduate historical research in Sri Lanka where he found his love for hand mixing and creating traditional breads and flatbreads. Upon his return to the United States, he spent a few years working in politics before trading in a fundraising career for the culinary field. After attending Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte, NC he had stints at Bouchon Bakery in Yountville, CA and H & F Bread Company in Atlanta, GA before moving to Charleston to explore opening an artisan bakery. Though his methods and breads may differ somewhat from his first experiments with dough in Sri Lanka, the inception of Brown’s Court Bakery from concept to reality has given David the chance to offer retail and wholesale customers a variety of different styles of breads and pastries using the highest quality ingredients and recipes perfected over time.

Worthwhile opened in December, 1993 in Charleston, SC, bringing a bit of the unknown to what was then a fairly conservative shopping environment. The mix of merchandise found in a department store translated to a boutique setting was an idea just catching on at the time…lifestyle… Worthwhile went one step further to include women’s and children’s clothing, creating a truly unique shopping environment. Our vision is to create a shopping experience that is one of sensory and aesthetic delight.
Our product mix is always varied…a new material in candle holders, a young clothing designer’s first season, a book about the bonds between sisters, loaves of soap sold by the slice, a foldable watering can, handbags made from seat belts…….we’re always on the lookout for the new and unusual, while we sometimes embrace the tried and true; We like translucent layers over opaque ones, a hard edge next to a soft fabric.
