Palmetto Portraits Project

PPThis book represents the culmination of our four-year project in partnership among MUSC, the SC State Museum in Columbia and the Halsey Institute at the College of Charleston: Palmetto Portraits Project. For the project, twenty-four noted and emerging photographers from throughout the state of South Carolina were commissioned to make portraits that portray South Carolinians—reflecting the full range and diversity of the state’s citizens, occupations, and recreational activities. Two hundred and eighty portraits were printed and hang within MUSC’s educational and clinical buildings, along with an identical set of prints, which will remain in the SC State Museum’s permanent collection. Within the pages of this book, to better explore the portraiture, there are four essays, one of which is written by esteemed southern novelist, Josephine Humphreys.

Palmetto Portraits Project won a Silver Addy from the Advertising Federation of Charleston and was recognized as a Notable State Document by the South Carolina State Documents Depository System.
