RECENT PAINTINGS

For the past few years, artist Gideon Bok has used his various studios as the subject matter for his paintings, attempting to recreate his ever-changing environment into one seemingly static painting. Each painting is painted at the same time of day, keeping a consistency in the lighting, however the contents of the studio change as the painting develops. Bok’s paintings are like time capsules, being the products of his constantly evolving studio they document a specific place during a window of time. Bok has inhabited a number of studios in the past few years, so there are series of paintings from each of these studios. Objects in his studios that are more permanent, like the room itself and the sofas and tables, are more defined with greater detail, while the transient objects are rendered in a looser, less definitive fashion. Overall, these paintings have a “layered” quality due to the variations in the presence of some objects in relation to others.

Gideon Bok is a recent Guggenheim recipient and a professor of painting at Hampshire College. His work is represented at Plane Space Gallery in New York, NY as well as Alpha Gallery in Boston, MA.  Bok will also serve as juror for the Young Contemporaries Annual Art Exhibition.
