artist statement

My love for art comes from a love of making. Hair texture, style, color, and their cultural associations have influenced my interest in the elaborate decoration of form and space. My creative process is one that parallels an approach to styling hair. The variable and compliant nature of hair allows me the freedom to work in a number of ways rooted in ornamentation. In the attempt to disguise the material, deception is a distinctive characteristic in manifestation of the artificial and ephemeral. Forms of accoutrement found within fashion, such as clothing, jewelry, and formal hat wear serve as visual cues for my own expression.
